Ban of Sale of Flavored Tobacco Products, Marin Board of Supervisors Meeting 10/30

As many of you know, I’ve been regularly attending the Marin County Board of Supervisors weekly meetings well before I decided to run for Marin Healthcare District Board on this November’s ballot.

I’ve become civic-minded for quite some time now, and I really enjoy participating in our local governmental processes.

The main topics from today’s meeting that I attended in person that were of interest to me are the following:

1.The new Marin Compass program that will replace the prior performance management platform that the Marin County government had been using previously.  I will elaborate more on this program in a later blog post.

2.The Supervisors voting to ban flavored tobacco, namely through vaping products such as e-cigarettes.

The Ban of Flavored Tobacco Sales in Marin

The issue of banning the sale of flavored tobacco products had an overwhelming amount of community support shown at the meeting. Many health community leaders spoke about their concerns about how the sale of these products is negatively affecting our community, particularly our youth. There were even some teenagers from local middle schools and high schools that spoke very eloquently in front of the Board of Supervisors.

It appeared as though only a few community members showed up to speak out against banning the sale of flavored tobacco products and those members of the community I believe had a financial interest in seeing that the ban did not go through due to the fact their businesses were selling tobacco.

I personally shared my own story of how my father picked up the habit of being addicted to nicotine and was unable to quit smoking, despite numerous attempts and he eventually died of a heart attack.

Below are some videos and photos from today’s discussion, and the ultimate vote by the Marin County Board of Supervisors to ban flavored tobacco sales in Marin. Bravo for the Board to listen to the community and put the health and safety of our community first!
